We had been searching for pretty much the entire time we lived in our starter home, for our “forever” home. While I’ve come to believe that it’s pretty unrealistic to think that we can determine exactly which home will fit our family for the next 5, 10 or 20 years, I think we found one that will fit our needs for quite some time.
Our must have criteria was for a home that was larger than our previous home at a little less than 1900 square feet, 4 bedrooms plus an extra space for kids to hang out, open concept, tall ceilings (this was non-negotiable! After being spoiled with 10 ft. ceilings in our first house, we couldn’t imagine not having them again- I think the hubs being on the tall side made standard ceiling height feel claustrophobic), minimum of 1 acre, and in our current school district. Seem like a detailed list? It was, and was probably the reason we stayed so long in our previous home. We love our school, our neighborhood, our friends and family that live very close- we have both grandparents less than 5 miles away, and siblings and in-laws even closer than that! While we would have loved even more acreage, that just wasn’t really an option unless we moved farther out, which meant changing school districts. We just couldn’t picture ourselves leaving all the comforts of home, so when this house came up less than half a mile away, we felt like it could be a great fit for us!
You can see from the floor plan, that this house was a 3 bedroom with a formal living room off of the great room. Having been a real estate
stalker enthusiast for the past 10 years, I recognized the floor plan, and remembered from the builders options that they offered that room to be a fourth bedroom, with a doorway off of the utility hallway. So that is our plan to make this a 4 bedroom home. Plus, having a living room directly off of the living room was just weird and awkward feeling.
We went back and forth for the longest time on many points- how much land do we really want? Because we are very particular in our needs/wants/style should we just build? Are we decisive enough to make all of the decisions necessary to build? Can we afford to build what we WANT? Do we want to landscape, build a shop, put in blinds?
When we found this house, we saw potential. It feels crazy to tell people that we have plans to remodel a house we just moved into, that was an upgrade for us, that we paid good money for. But when we decided that we didn’t have the time and energy to build brand new, we knew that meant the likelihood of finding a house that fit us perfectly was slim to none. The truth is, we like a project. Ok, maybe I like a project=). The amount of work needed wasn’t unmanageable, and other than the bedroom needs to be finished right away. The neighborhood seems absolutely wonderful so far, and from my calculations, we can add value by putting our touch on things.
Our big idea is to take out that funny wall separating the kitchen from the great room, and make one huge island. That project has already snowballed of course, and now we are thinking we will probably replace cabinets and flooring while we are knocking things down, and then tackle the weird off-centered fireplace as well.
We have a huge master bedroom which is a bonus! The bathroom has a giant jetted tub, which I was so missing in our old home and two sinks! I’m in heaven…
The two kids bedrooms are good sized, and have giant walk-in closets! My little hoarders will have so much storage space!
So anyways, you see where we are going to be heading in this house. A few renovations, and a whole lotta putting our touch on things. Stay tuned as we make this house our home!
